I am currently a master’s student at Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia studying Environmental Education and Communications. My key interests are around building a deeper sense of connection with the whole of the natural world and using this connection to drive my work to protect biodiversity from human-caused habitat loss. A military veteran living in Fall River, Nova Scotia, I volunteer with a number of environmental focused groups including, the Wilderness Issues Committee (WIC) of the Ecology Action Centre (EAC), the Shubenacadie Watershed Environmental Protection Society (SWEPS) and the Environmental Education and Sustainability Caucus (ESEC) of the Nova Scotia Environmental Network (NSEN).

Everything on this planet is interconnected and interdependent on each other in a series of systems within systems; we are just one system. We have, as a society, lost our sense of connection with the rest of the natural world and this had us to live as if we are not a part of this world, nothing could be further from the truth. I believe that if we return to a sense of deep connection with the rest of the natural world, we will redevelop our love for nature and respect its inherent right to exist in health. This means that we must thoroughly examine our collective lifestyles and reduce our impact on the planet, and all beings on it, by using fewer resources, especially those that are non-renewable. We are at a tipping point in our planet’s history and how we choose to live over the next few decades will significantly impact the life of all living beings on this planet.

Abstract
Developing a deeper connection with nature can benefit one’s physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, as well as society through an increase in pro-environmental attitudes and greater empathy for the rest of the natural world. This project builds on existing methods of deepening one’s connection with nature including Goethean imagination, White’s Mindful-Affective-Perception-Imagination-in-Nature (MAPIN), and Forest Therapy’s focus on bringing awareness to one’s experience in nature. It uses an art-influenced, self-reflexive, phenomenological approach to explore my own experiences in finding deeper connection. Applying Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to explore these lived experiences, a five-step self-directed programme, consisting of discovery, greeting, meditation and contemplation, activities, and gratitude, emerged to facilitate a deeper connection with more-than-human nature.
